Eclectic Acoustic Soul Series for Peace
June.04.2003
by Lisa N. Burnam

The room began to fill with an almost tangible anticipation; everyone stirring in their seats, smiles lighting their faces and heads bobbing to the catchy mixes of popular tunes emanating from the loudspeakers while waiting for the show to begin. Interestingly enough, this audience, was one of the most diverse I have seen in a long time. It was a beautiful fusion of the young 'hip hop' generation with their predecessor, the generation of rhythm and blues or more commonly called 'old school.'

A strong sense of pride welled within me as I sat along side my elders, watching the delight in their expressions as they jived to music from groups such as City High and Common Sense. Considering the diverseness of the audience, none knew what type of evening we were in store for.

And on came the panoply of talent. The range of creativity that graced the stage space was extraordinary. The event featured hip hop lyricists proclaiming oneness with God, self-love and respect. There were earthy vocalists singing of love and life, while a spoken word artist preached on the state of the world and the struggles of people of color everywhere. The band which was there played smooth romantic pieces, reminiscent of classic rhythm and blues. The overall effect of the event left you with a sense of fulfillment.

The Performers: Dini, Sol Infinite, Timothy Dark's Revelation, Elly Neb, Amelia, Jihad and Black Fluid Productions.

The "Eclectic Acoustic Soul Series for Peace" was the brainchild of Tisha Carter's organization, Promoting Positive Cultural Arts of New Jersey. It was a free event which took place at Rouzeau's Manor, formerly known as Scott's Manor, in Orange, New Jersey. And was sponsored by various companies such as: Harlem Brewing Company, Na'meen clothing, Cojo Art, Sonic Foundry, Third Eye Apparel, Loop NYC, Forman Mills, Ecko Clothing, Complex Magazine and many more...

Merchandise from these businesses was donated and distributed between acts to members of the audience. If it was not distributed, it was made available for anyone to get a hold of. This event was nothing less than dream manifest to those who worked so hard to make it a reality. When the night ended, some walked away with goody bags filled with music and magazines and others with fashionable bags for wearing, but you can be certain all left with positive words and sounds resonating in mind and spirit.
