Old wax

A good site for tracking down old music, possibly Isis' solo record is http://www.gemm.com/

I don't know any websites that specialize in early 90s hip hop, but such a site would do very well. They would get sued of something though.

Want X-Clan Material
I'm a Jamaican living in Jamaica and I was an avid X-Clan 'fan' in the early 90s. I would really like some help in getting my hands on Isis Solo album entitled 'Rebel Soul'.
And is there a compilation of X-Clan Videos anywhere around? And are there websites that cater to preserving and showing videos from that era?

Brother J and the X-Clan
THE FCC COMES TO CALI: BROTHER J TO ATTEND HEARINGS

Over the past few weeks more and more people are starting to see just
how unbalanced mainstream media is becoming. What was once considered
the 4th Estate or branch of government is now becoming an oppressive
tool that seems to be in the pockets of the Bush administration and
large corpoirate interest. A lot of this was crystallized during the
War in Iraq when it was discovered that major outlets were more than
just embedded with our troops, but where outright 'blindly'
cheerleading for the current administration while simultaneously using
their vast resources to silence those who disagree.

In other words if you don't follow the party line there will be a Bill
O'Reilly or Micheal Savage or as was the case with the Dixie Chicks
last night, even a Diane Sawyers sweating you and doing what they can
to shut you down and silence you.. For folks who don't know and
wonder why Ms Sawyers was trying so hard to hoo-ride the Dixie Chicks
in her interview last night.. perhaps her true colors were showing..
Sawyer held several positions in President Nixon's administration.
She was part of the Nixon-Ford transition team from 1974 to 1975. She
also assisted former President Nixon in the writing of his memoirs in
1974 and 1975. Betcha didn't know that.. And they say the press is a
bastion for bleeding heart liberals..

In anycase more and more folks are linking up and joining forces to
try and do something about this overt lack of balance in media. All
this is complicated by the fact that many radio stations were already
under fire for playing the same 10 songs over and over and over again
with little room for local artists. Others were being questioned
about the lack of balance in the themes of the songs they play. A lot
of times, especially in the urban sector what you tend to hear are
gangsta thug life or misogynist themes while everything else is swept
under the rug. It's that way from coast to coast with little
variation. The other complaint is that many arytist are now being
pressured to perform at the concert venues owned by these radio
stations and media outlets. To refuse might be a restriction of
airplay... So now folks are gearing up and fighting back...

If you're in New York, long time radio vet Bob Law will be doing a
special broadcast on WBAI 99.5 FM from 3-4:30 pm to talk about the
Turn off the Radio Campaign which is now spreading to other cities
around the country. Law will be focusing on what he describes as the
censorship of Black Music and how major radio corporations have been
using the FCC to hijack the airwaves. Is it about money or is it
about who controls the flow of information to control the culture? If
you're outside of NY you can peep the show on line at
http://www.bai.org

Here in Cali folks are gearing up for a round of FCC hearings both in
the Bay Area this Saturday April 26th [at the City hall in SF] and in
LA on Monday April 28th [USC School of Journalism] where the
discussion of media consolidation will take place. For those who
don't know FCC chairman Michael Powell has been pushing to further
deregulate radio and other media outlets and allow these corporations
to own even more..

Here in SF Brother J of X-Clan will be attending and sitting on one of
the panels to discuss the issues facing artists, lack of cultural
diversity and other related issues. He said that his purpose is to
not only share his experience but to also empower the people and offer
a solution. He noted that people have power ...

There will be a noon time rally in front of City Hall where lots of
people and artists are expected to attend and speak out..

If you happen to be in SF the Young Democrats are hosting a day long
seminar.. One of the key panels they will be dealing with is Media
and the way the War was covered.. It's important to note that this
concern with media is everywhere.. Several prominent elected
officials and reporters and activist will be on hand for the
proceedings... http://www.ceebayconference2003.com
-------------------------

Well known Bay Area journalist Harrison Chastang wrote a good column
worth peeping: http://www.sfbayview.com/042303/tellthefcc042303.shtml

In this article Harrison talks about how all this media consolidation
is rapidly squeezing the life out of Black owned radio outlets..

Another article worth reading was penned by Darren Keast of the East
Bay Express:
http://www.eastbayexpress.com/issues/2003-04-16/music.html/1/index.html

In this article he focuses on the Bay Area's Freedom Fighter Music who
have just released an anti-war album and the issues they have been
facing at a time where being political active can be a liability

Finally there's an excellent article that appeared in this week's
Oakland Tribune that also addresses the issue of Hip Hop Censorship...

http://www.oaklandtribune.com/Stories/0,1413,82~1804~1340413,00.html

Lastly you can listen to the FCC Hearings by tuning into KPFA 94.1 FM
or peeping the web at http://www/kpfa.org

REMEMBER SONNY CARSON
I would like to send condolences out to Professor X and is family on the untimely loss of his father and Great Activist Sonny Carson...I was listening to Davey D's Hard Knock Radio(kpfa 94.1: in the Bay Area)when I first heard of his passing...

I couldn't believe this brother use to shut down crackhouses and run drug dealers off the block and even a story was made of his life "The Education of Sonny Carson"

Truly an inspiration...

SORELY missed!
When I first experienced hip hop back in the early '80's one of my biggest gripes was that there was no Afrocentric rap that was worth its salt. And then there was X- Clan! I'm a bass junkie.....period. And those beats and even the barotone voices got to me. Not to mention the science the brothers dropped! Exquisite! I'd LOVE to see THAT reunion!

PEace..TWICE!

The Light is OUT!
