The Roots are still real
Granted, Phrenology was not their best album, especially when compared to Things Fall Apart. But to say they aren't " deep" anymore says to me that you haven't heard the Tipping Point. " Guns are Drawn" is about as deep as music can get. Plus, Hub and ?uestlove are the best rythym section that hip-hop has ever seen. Black Thought's lyrics are not only clever but relevant, and his words in Web are just tight.

The Roots Have Lost Thier Way
Peace Gods and Goddesses, Daughters and Sons, Inititates and Neophytes. It brings great sorrow to my heart to say so, but The Roots have lost their way. To be quite frank, "Phrenology" was a horrid follow-up to the masterpiece "Things Fall Apart." Most won't admit it, but the reality is that today's climate in both hip-hop and the Black Community is quite hostile to almost anything dealing with "actualized self-consciouness," that is to say, "word, song, imagery, soul, and spirit" which speaks pass the "300 year old" Black sterotypes that saw the likes of Al Jolson, Step-and-Fetch-It, Amos and Andy, Good Times, and Blackxploitation movies find success. The Roots were never really "conscious" on a deeper level, however, they had all the potential to be, and were making excellent ground by surrounding themselves with people who were heading in the same direction, e.g. Jill Scott, Zap Mama, Mos Def, Common, Erykah Badu, etc. The same thing that has happened to The Roots happened to Tribe Called Quest and The Native Tongue family...commercial success, n all but the rarest cases a sure sign of "the beginning of the end for many 'underground, grass roots' artists. Right now The Roots simply suck! Hopefully, they will get back on track before it is too late!!!

why the Roots are rotten sorry-asses
Having lived in filthy Philly for several years when the Roots ascended from local obscurity to some national prominence as a "conscious" hiphop act, I have to put my two cents in. After professing support for political prisoner/revolutionary journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal, the Roots showed themselves to be the unprincipled scaredy cats that they are. Mumia's defense is based in Philly and they have never done anything concrete to support him, besides mouthing a few lines on the Mumia 911 album. After promising to support the movment to free Mumia, they stooped so low as to diss Pam Africa, the coordinator of International Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal, when she came to set up a table at one of their concerts since they were more concerned with the Grammys and support from Newport. while they may be talented artists, they are just like the many spineless fools in Philly that are too scared to come out and do some thing for a righteous man facing execution by this rotten-ass government. Long live Mumia and fuck the Roots.
