PARIS VS THE BEAST by Davey D
Bay Area rapper Paris had an unpleasant encounter when he paid a visit to San Francisco-based Clear Channel radio station KMEL Wednesday, January 14, while on air doing an interview with morning show host Chuy Gomez about his new album, Sonic Jihad. During the interview Gomez took live phone calls when several callers spoke up and complained that it was a shame that there weren't more opportunities to hear politically charged raps and more artists like Paris. The callers put the station on blast and reprimanded Chuy for playing it safe and flooding the community with negative material.
Paris told the caller that deejays like Chuy aren't the people responsible for making the musical decisions, instead it's the program directors and higher ups at Clear Channel that call all the shots. Those remarks elicited a swift response from KMEL Program director and Clear Channel Regional Vice President of Programming Michael Martin who stormed into the studio and told Paris to "Get the **** out of his station".
Paris remained calm and quickly checked Martin about his disrespectful manner. Aside from his obvious attempt to provoke a physical confrontation, Martin was out of line because Paris had recently purchased many thousands of dollars worth of commercials. In this instance, it wasn't just an artist Martin was disrespecting, but a paying customer of his employer. Heated words were exchanged , and Martin, obviously feeling threatened, called security and ran back to his office and locked the door - which was an over the top move since it was he who was the aggressor in the first place.
Listeners to KMEL did not hear the exchange because the mics were abrubtly turned off. One second you heard Paris talking, and the next second all you heard were songs and commercials. It was obvious that something went down--especially when listeners never heard Paris say goodbye.
We caught up with Paris and asked him his take on what happened. Was this an isolated incident or something that reflects a larger and more troublesome picture?
"Obviously we touched a nerve. Normally I don't speak on unfinished business, but the cold part about it is the fact that the COMMUNITY was speaking out, not just me, so it carried much more weight than if I were the only one talking about shitty-ass commercial radio and it's redundant, derogatory playlists. It's bigger than just a Paris record, it goes to the core of the problem. These racist cowards fill our airwaves up with negative material that influences our communities and feel they don't have to be held accountable for what they do. We are saying that they do. The community is saying it loud and clear: PROVIDE BALANCE!
The stations say they respond to the tastes of the streets, but they dictate the tastes of the streets, and there is a direct cause and-effect-relationship between what they play and how the community responds. How many times have you memorized the words to a weak-ass song that you don't even like because they play it 10 times an hour? And how many times have you heard them break new records by artists that the street has never even heard of? Stations aren't responding to the streets in these instances, they are receiving payola (pay for play) from labels that they have sweetheart deals with. Michael Martin programs 22 stations. Why? Who is this devil and how is he qualified to interact with us at all? I'm over 108,000 units deep on my latest in 4 months, with no video and no airplay, and am a motherfuckin vet in this hip-hop game, with over 3.5 million records sold independently, because I SPEAK TO US. We are the streets, not this Wizard behind the curtain. They need to have community outreach soon before shit really gets out of hand." |

That was a great interview with my main man Paris, the general. He needs to collaborate with Killah Priest. They would make a great team. Just like Dead Prez and Black Star. Peace and Asaalayum Alakyum. |

| Sonc Jihad in stores and online in September |
SONIC JIHAD, the long-awaited album by Paris, will be released worldwide on September 23rd in both retail stores and online at www.guerrillafunk.com. The webstore release has been delayed as a result of recent developments which lead to the securing of worldwide distribution capabilities through traditional channels for Guerrilla Funk.
About Sonic Jihad After a mild hiatus Paris returns with his most pointedly-focused and brutal condemnation of the ills of society to date. Waging righteous warfare (hence the title) on all that he perceives as being wrong with world in this current political climate of manufactured fear and "War on Terror," he covers such issues as the New World Order, the manmade origins of AIDS, military lies and propaganda, police brutality and the embarrassing state that hip hop is currently in. The first single, "What Would You Do?” has already been a lightning-rod for controversy in the United States, garnering coverage from such notable sources as MTV2, The New York Times and MSNBC for it’s suggestion that the Bush Administration played a key role in orchestrating the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. And it doesn’t stop there -- the album also features input from progressive hip-hop visionaries Dead Prez, Public Enemy and Kam. Add dancehall sensation Capelton to this already impressive mix and you have a potent molotov cocktail of an album ready to explode.
As one of the few remaining artists who can be relied upon to remain consistent with both his content and his dedication to musical quality, Paris' latest effort will please not only his existing loyal supporters, but should prove to gain him many new listeners as well. Be sure to check in often, as we’ll be releasing additional mp3s of new material soon.
What we need now is for supporters to let buyers at stores in their area know that there is demand for Sonic Jihad! Let your local djs and radio stations know that you support real hip-hop and demand more from your entertainment!

The Return Of Truth In Hip-Hop! GuerrillaFunk.com
Peace and thanks to all supporters who have written in!
We know it’s been awhile since we last chopped it up, but we’ve been working overtime in anticipation of the new albums and webstore at GuerrillaFunk.com. All recording/design is complete and there are BIG THANGS on the horizon for the remainder of the year!
The components for all manufacturing are finished, and all music, past and present, will be available at GuerrillaFunk.com shortly. We thank you all for your patience! You won’t be disappointed, as a great deal of time, effort and energy has been placed on producing the highest quality product possible. After all, if it’s not done right, it’s not worth doing at all, and in this age of bad music, we’re sure you can appreciate the fact that good things come to those who wait. We’ll be releasing additional mp3s from the new Paris LP, "Sonic Jihad," soon so be sure to check in often.
We will offer music in CD and 180-gram Vinyl formats and will stock a healthy selection of t-shirts, sweatshirts, dvds, posters, stickers and related merchandise for both Paris and Dead Prez (although Dead Prez merch will be available a few weeks after the store opens). We are in negotiations with other high-profile artists as well and will be making new announcements shortly. Again, we can't thank y'all enough for your patience & support. Everythang is an uphill struggle when you represent what's real...
On a non-related note, we apologize for the lapse in correspondence to personal emails lately. The amount of messages has simply become too great to stay on top of at regular intervals. Regular correspondence will resume once product becomes available. If you have to reach Paris for interviews or business, please contact his publicist, Nicole Balin, at nikyb@adelphia.net.
New essays are up at www.guerrillafunk.com - must-reads for anyone desiring truth in these days of manufactured fear and oppression. Come by and check us out.
Also, it appears that some email subscriber’s memberships were lost in a recent email server switch. If you are receiving these newsletters then you’re o.k -- but please remember to visit the site frequently -- and please encourage others to do so and subscribe.

The Return Of Truth In Hip-Hop! GuerrillaFunk.com
Peace and thanks to all supporters who have written in!
The momentum is building, and much support is being garnered for the GuerrillaFunk.com website and the forthcoming “Sonic Jihad” LP.
Dig today’s New York Times article on Paris, in the “Pop Life” section: http://www.nytimes.com/pages/arts/index.html
Also, the much-discussed Paris - MTV2 interview is finally scheduled to run on “The Wave” on April 20th. It runs bi-weekly and was already pushed back twice due to increased war coverage at MTV. Hopefully they will make good on their pledge to run the in-depth story and buck the urge to echo the pro-war sentiments of the major networks. Thanks in advance to everyone over there if they actually pull it off.
In other news, GuerrillaFunk.com has recently entered into a non-exclusive arrangement to distribute merchandise for fellow revolutionary artists Dead Prez. Their items will be available in the soon-to-be-launched webstore at GuerrillaFunk.com.

The Return Of Truth In Hip-Hop! GuerrillaFunk.com
Thanks to all supporters who have written in!
There have been many inquiries as to the availability of new music, especially “Sonic Jihad.” It’s coming in May - with appearances by Kam, Dead Prez and Public Enemy! It will be distributed both traditionally by certain companies with the ability to do so (given this constrictive political climate) in various territories globally and via the internet at www.guerrillafunk.com.

Event Update:
One and a half years after the 9/11 tragedy, there is still no comprehensive investigation into the events of that day. The United States is now involved in a global conflict against terrorism, much of it based solely on assumptions of guilt for the attacks on American soil. But what if everything you knew about 9/11 was wrong?
Sundance-award winning producers Guerrilla News Network present:
AfterMath: Unanswered Questions from 9/11.
Narrated and scored by Paris and featuring interviews shot by GNN syndicate producers in six cities, AfterMath features nine (9) people answering eleven (11) of the most pressing questions that emanate from the terrible and, as yet, unexplained, events of that day. As you will see, these are questions that continue to overshadow and critically challenge the official 'version' of the story.
Exclusive East Bay screening (film makers present)

About us:
Guerrilla Funk Recordings was born out of necessity. It’s a musical organization that was founded by Paris - the politically conscious artist best known for the incendiary song “Bush Killa” - that’s specifically intended to counter the corporate stranglehold of censorship currently plaguing the entertainment industry. It is intended to provide balance in this intolerant climate of suppression of free speech and artistic expression, and to serve as a vehicle for those who are unable - not because of lack of talent or relevance - to be heard. Understand that there now exists a harmful double-standard at most record labels of endorsing artists who only espouse misogyny, mindless violence, and drug culture references in their music -- while at the same time ignoring artists who strive to enlighten and inspire. It is our pledge at Guerrilla Funk Recordings not to follow suit.
In GuerrillaFunk.com you will find all of the information that you always wanted to know about Paris - and much, much more! From Music to World News, Real Estate info to Financial Planning assistance, GuerrillaFunk.com as it all - but with an alternative twist! Be sure to check out the timely and informative essays in the “Thought Box” section - and dig the videos and new music throughout! Also, be sure to visit the “Press” section and our “Downloadable Press Kit” for graphics and tools to help support GuerrillaFunk.com!
