A multi-cultural, multi-instrumental, multi-flingual crew from Los Angeles; Ozomatli is an explosive union of hip-hoppers, rockers, funksters & salsa & merengue players. Chali 2na & DJ Cut Chemist from Jurassic 5 were part of the group for their first album; & De La Soul, Common, & members of Black Eyed Peas join the party on the most recent record; "Embrace The Chaos". Throwing everything but the kitchen sink into the mix they produce an energetic & contagiously fun musical backdrop for their socio/political messages. Though the party music keeps you entertained there's no doubt there is a very, very politically aware group of musicians present and consciously sharing ideas here. In fact Ozomatli & Rage Against the Machine rocked a protest show together accross from the Democratic National Convention in 2000. It was during their Ozo's set that Police in riot gear started to disperse the crowd. Unlike no other group; this is where you can join the revolution & party at the same time.

Ozomatli: Busted in Austin

In the early morning hours of March 18, the manager and two members
of the L.A.-based--and grammy-award-winning--band Ozomatli were
arrested by the Austin police. Bass player Wildog Abers and manager
Amy Blackman Romero were charged with misdemeanors, and percussionist
Jiro Yamaguchi was charged with assault on a peace officer--a felony
that carries a possible 10 years in jail. The Austin police claimed
that the band was in violation of noise ordinances when they led a
Samba line of people who had been at their earlier performance--
described by many in attendance as one of the best and most intense
performances during the festival. Wildog was charged with violating a
noise ordinance and Amy was charged with interfering with police
officers. The cops claim that Jiro whacked a cop over the head five
times with his drum.
Ozomatli has a strong reputation of standing with the oppressed
people and standing up against the oppression this system brings down
here and around the world. They celebrate the people's resistance to
oppression and their hopes for a better world in their music and
their lives. And people love them for that-- as well as for their
kick-ass music. Wherever they went in the city that day, people made
a point of coming up to offer their support. Some fans made T-shirts
that said "Free the Ozo 3" and "Free Ozo." One woman brought the band
100 T-shirts she made that said "Wanted Ozomatli" and then had the
mug shots on it. Everywhere they went people came up and asked what
they could do to help.

for those of you in the L.A. area ... there is an OZOMATLI SHOW at the House Of Blues(sunset strip) on Dec 8th they'll probably be performing new songs from their new album " coming up" check it out !! |

I was channel flipping. And I noticed An American Family was on PBS. (That's a kick ass show) but on this particular show they had Ozomatli and they did a video for Soy Guerrillero (THAT is a kick ass song).
