Free Angola
I hope this message will get some people to listen to what is really going on in Angola.
Angola a country in need of help, President Eduardo Santos, first elected 30yrs ago. Still in power up to now,
and plans to run for election again this year 2006! Need i say more, his wife owns 90%of shares in a dymond industry. Democracy ... i think not. Oil companies drilling in the shores of Angola, minister of finance in Angola claims they have accounting problems(CBC) report on oil countrys. 4 Billion dollars just from Texaco is handed to the Angolan Goverment and people still starving , mines are still there in places that no one knows. Princess Diana the only person who trully showed interest in the country, why is it that all the good people have to Die. I was born there, but left, unfortunately, great people, beautyful country , and allot of history. Im planing on going back, but i know they will probably turn me away when i get there. People listen up, open up your eyes and pay attention to the rest of the world , because what you have now , home , car , supermarket, jewlery, and clean water, its because of the people who are slaved still in this era, your leaders make these things happen but where it comes from and how,it is never told.I hope u ENJOY the relics you have but plzz dont forget about the rest of the world.
PEACE ..... RESPECT MOSDEF...KEPP IT REAL.

Words can't express how i feel about u and ur talent man.
I never really experienced ur hip-hop and only became familiar with ur work when i saw u in "bamboozled"...can u say "Blown away"........and since then i have been following ur career... i'm not a stalker i'm just in awe of ur talent...ur work is clean and always believable.....
I can't imagine why u haven't received an Oscar YET! but believe me it's coming...... i don't like cutting people down but Jamie Foxx was extremely good in "RAY" but he has peaked acting wise....... ur talent will soon outshine any other african american actor out there... and if u need a good PR man.....I'm there!...... toebeland@aol.com

As far as men go Dante Smith aka Mos Def is one of the finest brothers I have laid eyes on in a long time. Not only is he handsome, he is very smart and also well rounded. He is not afraid to show who he really is no matter what people think. I respect the fact that he has decided to lend himself to different projects. Being an artist is being in touch with not just your culture but all. If you ever read this Dante Smith keep it up

Mos Def album inches closer.
"A spokesperson confirms that Mos Def will release a new album sometime this year on Geffen, which recently absorbed the artist roster of Def's former home, Rawkus Records. It will be his first set since his breakthrough 1999 solo debut, Black on Both Sides."

Mos Def's rock band: Black Jack Johnson
"Mos Def has formed a black rock band -Black Jack Johnson- who's ambition is to create a true rap-rock hybrid album, where both rap and rock can thrive on the same songs, unlike other hybrid bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, where the only hip hop element that the band has is the way they dress.

The Black Jack Johnson project is something that Mos Def feels very passionately about, because it is more challenging than to simply put out another solo hip hop album like everyone expects him to do. Also, it has alot of historical significance, since rock was created by black American musicians in the mid 1900s, but stolen and credited to white rockers like Elvis Presley. For this reason, Mos Def wants to show that rock is black music, and that black artists can put out an album that isn't hip hop or R'n'B.

The band is named after Jack Johnson (1878-1946), the first black man to win the heavyweight boxing championship of the world, in 1908, when he knocked out Tommy Burns in Australia.

To form Black Jack Johnson, Mos Def brought together some of the greatest black rock musicians of our time, each one of them with outstanding credentials, talent and experience:

Will Calhoun - Drums
Will Calhoun, the acclaimed drummer from the Bronx, New York, graduated from the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where he received a Bachelors degree in Music Production and engineering. As a member of the very popular band "Living Color", Calhoun has a distinct and unique blend of improvisational and hard rock drumming. He has worked/recorded artists including B.B. King, Mick Jagger, Run-DMC and Public Enemy. Will has received many awards, including two Grammys, and in the late eighties, was labelled as the best drummer by several magazines including Rolling Stone.

Doug Wimbish - Bass
Doug Wimbish hails from Hartford, Connecticut, but got his career started as many do: in New York City. There he was the bassist in the house band of the legendary rap label Sugar Hill, backing Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five on their Message album, among many others. In 1992, he joined "Living Color", a popular band that Will Calhoun played in. Soon after, the band disbanded and Wimbish went back to playing on albums by Madonna, Mick Jagger, the Rolling Stones and Seal among others. He was alos part of the funk/electronica trio 'Jungle Funk'. Now, he has over 20 years of experience and talent as a bassist and musician.

Bernie Worrell - Keyboard
At the age of 3, Bernie Worrell began playing the piano. At the age of 4, he had his first concert performance. At the age of 8, he made his first concert composition. Worrell can easily be certified a prodigy. His studies at the New England Conservatory of Music and Julliard School of Music gave Worrell a strong classical foundation. He was one of the founding members of the group "Parliament- Funkadelic", where he co-wrote, co-produced, recorded and performed most of the group's compositions on their fifty-plus albums. Bernie Worrell is also one of the most sampled musicians, since many artists have used his riffs for their beats, including Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Salt 'n' Pepa, Snoop Dogg, En Vogue, Digital Underground, Heavy D, and De La Soul. In 1993, when David Letterman made his big move to CBS, Worrell helped launch the CBS Orchestra with Paul Shaffer. He also co-wrote the soundtrack of "Car 54, Where are You?" and Ice Cube's "Friday." On May 6 1997, Bernie Worrell was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Dr. Know [Gary Miller] - Guitar
Dr. Know was the guitarist of Bad Brains, a band that is considered to be one of the most slept on in the past 20 years. Bads Brains is a Rastafarian band with strong political views, and is said to be the hardest of the hardcore punk bands. Bad Brains disbanded in the early 80s, but is still celebrated as one of the greatest bands ever. On many tracks, Dr. Know rages with his guitar, and is said to be the closest incarnation to Jimi Hendrix in the 80s and 90s. He also perfectly blends the pomp of heavy metal with the frenzy of punk.

Black Jack Johnson has been touring for several months, and have also performed on HBO's Reverb. To the left is the hand-written 'set list' of their show on January 23 in New York's Bowery Ballroom, click it to enlarge. Their debut album is set to come out sometime in mid-2002.-mosdefinitely.com

I agree...
I agree. Mos Def's Black on Both Sides is excellent lyrically, musically and any other way. You have to be careful and listen to what he's saying. Sometimes the music is great and the rhythm of his delivery is so great that I don't pick up the words themselves. I had heard the Theives in the Night from BlackStar tons of times and one day I was listening to it while I was going to bed, I was half asleep and for some reason I just started to hear the words and I was like WOW.

Yo, I'm sure that everbody out listenin agree
That everything you see ain't really how it be
A lot of jokers out runnin in place, chasin the style
Be a lot goin on beneath the empty smile
Most cats in my area be lovin the hysteria
Synthesized surface conceals the interior
America, land of opportunity, mirages and camoflauges
More than usually -- speakin loudly, sayin nothin
You confusin me, you losin me
Your game is twisted, want me enlisted -- in your usary
Foolishly, most men join the ranks cluelessly
Buffoonishly accept the deception, believe the perception
Reflection rarely seen across the surface of the lookin glass
Walkin the street, wonderin who they be lookin past
Lookin glassed with them imported designer shades on
Stars shine bright, but the light -- rarely stays on
Same song, just remixed, different arrangement
Put you on a yacht but they won't call it a slaveship
Strangeness, you don't control this, you barely hold this
Screamin brand new, when they just sanitized the old shit
Suppose it's, just another clever Jedi mind trick
That they been runnin across stars through all the time with
I find it's distressin, there's never no in-between
We either niggaz or Kings
We either bitches or Queens
The deadly ritual seems immersed, in the perverse
Full of short attention spans, short tempers, and short skirts
Long barrel automatics released in short bursts
The length of black life is treated with short worth
Get yours first, them other niggaz secondary
That type of illin that be fillin up the cemetary
This life is temporary but the soul is eternal
Separate the real from the lie, let me learn you
Not strong, only aggressive, cause the power ain't directed
That's why, we are subjected to the will of the oppressive
Not free, we only licensed
Not live, we just excitin
Cause the captors.. own the masters.. to what we writin
Not compassionate, only polite, we well trained
Our sincerity's rehearsed in stage, it's just a game
Not good, but well behaved cause the ca-me-ra survey
most of the things that we think, do, or say
